Do I need fly fishing experience to join a tour?
No. Our guides work with everyone from first-time fly casters to seasoned saltwater anglers. Tell us your level when booking and we'll match the water and coaching to it.
What's included in the tours?
All tours include quality fly fishing equipment (rods, reels, lines and flies from 6 wt to 12 wt) and boats or rafts specialized for fly fishing. The roosterfish tour also includes drinks, food and hotel transportation, and the machaca tour includes transfer, tackle, food and soft drinks. The Tempisque float has bathrooms and changing rooms available.
When is the best time to fly fish in Costa Rica?
It depends on the species. Roosterfish fish best from June to October; the guapote (rainbow bass) float fishes year-round and is best when the river runs clear; machaca peaks when riverside trees drop fruit and flowers. See the full season guide or our month-by-month article.
Where do you pick up?
We pick up from the main hotel and resort destinations of Guanacaste. The roosterfish grounds are 1 hour to 1 hour 45 minutes from the main hotel zones, and transportation is included on the roosterfish and machaca tours.
Do I need a fishing license?
Costa Rica requires a sport fishing license for saltwater fishing. Don't worry about the paperwork — mention it when you book and we'll help you sort out exactly what you need before the trip.
What should I bring?
All fishing gear is provided. Bring sun protection (sunscreen, hat, long-sleeve shirt), polarized sunglasses, light quick-dry clothing, a rain layer in the green season and a camera. We cover the rest.
Can you customize a trip or combine tours?
Yes. Many guests combine the saltwater roosterfish tour with the guapote float or the machaca topwater trip in the same week, and we also arrange custom tours. Tell us your dates and wishlist through the contact form.
How far in advance should I book?
As early as you can, especially for the June–October roosterfish season and holiday weeks. Early contact also gives us time to plan around tides and river conditions for your dates.
